Upon the People

September 2021 | Written by Ellie McGinty

Graphic by Caitlin Palmer

upon the people,

upon a place.

upon nations and cities,

all things displaced.

upon our lives,

upon our deaths.

upon our fullness,

our emptiness.

upon our laughter,

upon our grief.

upon our fight,

and grim defeat.

upon our days,

upon our nights.

upon our hearing and smell,

taste, touch, and sight.

upon our hearts,

upon our minds.

upon our bodies,

against design.

upon our work,

upon our rest.

upon our homes,

idleness.

upon our habits,

upon things done.

upon our rhythms,

things left undone.

upon our tongues,

upon our hands.

upon us, curses

which sin demands.

upon our deeds,

upon our words.

upon those ignored,

and those we’ve heard.

upon temptation,

upon our wounds.

upon our brokenness;

Jesus, come soon.

upon our witness,

upon our time.

upon us, presence:

water, turned to wine.

upon our fear,

upon our loss.

upon our sin,

upon a cross.

upon the quiet,

upon the loud.

upon the music,

convicting sound.

upon the people,

upon their distress.

descends our God,

in glory, love, and tenderness.
