Music Ministries

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

- Romans 15:5-6

Our livestream volunteers for 1st & 2nd Service run our livestream & cameras for the services. Our 1st & 2nd Service slide team helps navigate our slides for worship and for the sermon. No tech background is needed. Just a willingness to learn! We also have a team of volunteers who serve either first service or second service to control the sound board for the music and the sermon. No experience is necessary! Just a heart and willingness to learn!

Our handbell choir shares its beautiful sound throughout the year, offering music for preludes, offertories, and occasionally joining the choir to enhance an anthem. Our presence adds a joyful and meaningful dimension to our special services during Advent, Lent, Christmas, and Easter. The bell choir rehearses weekly for an hour, with rehearsal times arranged to accommodate members’ schedules. While we don’t play in services every week, we aim to participate approximately once a month, and sometimes more in the summertime as schedules allow.

No prior experience is needed to join—the bell choir is a supportive and encouraging group. Whether you’re new to music or just new to bells, fellow ringers and the director will help you grow and feel right at home.

During the summer months, while the choir takes a break, we invite members of the congregation to share their musical gifts during the offering time. This can include vocal solos, duets, trios, or small ensembles such as a men’s or ladies’ choir.

Instrumental offerings are also welcome—whether you play piano, organ, strings, winds, or any other instrument, we encourage both solo and group performances. There are also opportunities for instrumentalists to play an obbligato part with the chancel choir during the year. All who are willing to share their talent in worship are warmly invited to participate!

Vocal & Instrumental Opportunities

Our choir helps lead worship each week from September through May. We rehearse on Wednesday nights from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Most Sundays during the academic year, we guide the congregation in singing both cherished and new hymns, and present a special anthem during the offering. We love sharing uplifting choral music, including favorites by composers like Mark Hayes, Lloyd Larson, Joe Martin, and Craig Courtney, as well as timeless classics such as the Hallelujah Chorus and God So Loved the World. Our choir is a welcoming fellowship—a musical family for anyone who loves to praise God through song. No audition is needed, and all are welcome to join!

Dr. Kelly Ker Hackleman holds degrees in piano performance (B.M., M.M., D.M.A.) and taught for many years at the college level. Recognizing that God was calling her to church music, Kelly offered her keyboard skills as pianist and organist at Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in VA and served there for nine years. She has filled that same position at Gashland since 2013, and in the fall 2023, she also stepped into the role of Director of Choirs for our traditional service, honoring the legacy of her mother’s choral directing career.

Kelly enjoys cooking, gardening, snorkeling, cycling, and arranging music for worship, and spending time with her husband, Martin, and their two mini golden doodles. Grateful for the gifts God has given her, she feels deeply privileged to glorify Him and serve her Gashland church family through the joy, beauty, and spiritual richness of music.
